ToggleAbout the Opportunity
At ALG, internships are arranged according to calendar months, meaning that each internship starts on the first working day of the month and ends on the last working day of the month.
Pre-final year law students, or those in their fourth year of a five-year program and their second year of a three-year program, are invited by ALG’s internship program to apply for a “Pre-Final Year Internship” with ALG’s General IP and Patents practice.
General Eligibility
Students who are currently enrolled in a full-time law degree program that has been accredited by the Bar Council of India and who anticipate becoming eligible to register with the Bar Council of a state in India to practice advocacy after completing the program may apply for an internship at ALG.
Please review the information under “Types of Internship” and “Categories of Internship” below for particular eligibility to various internship programs.
Types of Internship
ALG administers following Internships under its Internship Program:
1. Pre-Final Year Internship
Only students enrolled in their pre-final year of law school are eligible for this internship. Applications for the Pre-Final Year Internship are accepted from 12 months prior to the start of the Pre-Final Year to 1 month prior to its conclusion. This implies that as soon as you start your antepenultimate year of law school, you can apply for a Pre-Final Year Internship. The Intern must be enrolled full-time in the pre-final year of the legal degree program for the duration of the internship. A pre-final year student is not permitted to complete more than one internship throughout their one-month internship period. Internships during the pre-final year are not paid positions.
2. Final Year (Follow-On) Internship
Only students in their final year of law school who have completed an ALG Pre-Final Year Internship and have obtained a recommendation from ALG to apply for a Final Year (Follow-On) Internship are eligible for this internship. Once you have received a recommendation to apply for a Final Year (Follow-On) Internship, you have up to one month left before the Final Year ends to do so. But between the Pre-Final Year Internship and the Final Year (Follow-On) Internship, there needs to be a minimum 6-month lapse. However, the Intern must be enrolled full-time in the final year of the legal school for the duration of the internship. Last Year (Follow-On) Position is for
In case the Final Year (Follow-On) Internship is an assessment internship for the Placement of the intern, it will be a paid internship. Currently, the stipend for a paid Final Year (Follow-On) Internship is INR 12,500/-.
Although it strengthens the application if made, a suggestion to apply for a Final Year (Follow-On) Internship does not ensure selection. Both in recommending candidates for Final Year (Follow-On) Internships and in accepting applications for Final Year (Follow-On) Internships, it is selective. Only those candidates who can reasonably be expected to receive a referral to apply for placement in an attorney post are awarded a final year (follow-on) internship. If the intern had obtained a placement prior to the start of the Final Year (Follow-On) internship, it would not qualify as an assessment internship and would not be compensated.
3. Final Year (Regular) Internship
Only students in their final year of law school who did not intern with ALG during their pre-final year or who worked with ALG but did not earn a referral for a final year (follow-on) internship are eligible to apply for this internship. Applications for the Final Year (Regular) Internship are accepted from 12 months prior to the start of the Final Year until 1 month prior to its conclusion. This implies that as soon as you start your pre-final year, you can apply for a final year internship. However, the Intern must be enrolled full-time in the final year of the legal school for the duration of the internship. Final Year Regular Internships are one-month long, and you cannot do more than one internship during this time.
Categories of Internship
There are two categories of Internship
(i) Patents – The scope of Patents Internship subsumes the practice areas of not only patents but also designs, plant varieties, technology and telecom. Eligibility to apply for Patents Internship is restricted to students having at least a graduation degree in science.
(ii) General IP – The scope of General IP Internship covers all other practice areas of core IP as well as of IP+ including environment and consumer protection.
While applying for an Internship, you need to apply either for the Position of an Intern (Patents) or for the Position of an Intern (General IP). You will need to select one and only one of these two categories for your Internship application.
