Originally called Bhopal University, Barkatullah University was founded in 1970 in Madhya Pradesh’s capital. It was renamed Barkatullah University in 1988 in honor of Bhopal-born liberation fighter Prof. Barkatullah.

 

About M.E.R.U.

A government endeavor to promote higher education in India, the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) program includes the Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (M.E.R.U.) scheme. The initiative offers funding to improve academic programs, research facilities, and infrastructure in higher education institutions throughout India with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary approaches to education and research.

Founded in 1982, Barkatullah University’s Department of Legal Studies and Research is still dedicated to offering top-notch legal education and is a preeminent center for legal research and instruction. B.A.LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M. (C.B.C.S.), Ph.D., and Post-Doctoral are among the programs it provides.

 

About the Seminar

The Department of Legal Studies and Research is pleased to present the seminar on Human Rights in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Opportunities, and Way Ahead, which is set for December 10 and 11, 2024, as we move into a time when artificial intelligence and human rights are becoming more and more intertwined. Under the Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (M.E.R.U.) program, the Department is hosting the seminar. The event will provide a forum for investigating creative solutions to human rights issues in the AI era.

  • AI and Freedom of Speech and Expression
  • AI and Criminal Justice System (Fair Trial, Due Process, Judicial Transparency, etc.)
  • Right to Privacy in the Age of AI and Personal Data Protection
  • Comparative Legal Approaches to AI Regulation
  • AI and Intellectual Property
  • Impact of AI on Access to Social and Economic Rights (Education, Healthcare, Employment, etc.)
  • Historical Perspective and Ethical Implications of AI on Human Rights
  • AI and the Future of Human Rights Protection

Note: The themes and sub-themes listed above are merely examples and are not all-inclusive. In order to keep their work in line with the ever-evolving fields of artificial intelligence and human rights, authors are encouraged to investigate and add to the conversation on any one of these sub-themes.

 

Eligibility

Legal professionals, researchers, advocates, human rights activists and organizations, AI researchers, technical experts, and developers, policymakers, government officials, academicians, engineers, and students in disciplines like law and technology are among the varied audience members for this seminar.

 

Expected Outcomes

  • Participants will learn about the possible advantages and difficulties of artificial intelligence as it relates to human rights.
  • In order to protect human rights, the event will add to policy conversations about regulating AI technologies.
  • A forum for interdisciplinary networking and cooperation between academics, legal experts, technologists, human rights advocates, and policymakers will be offered by the event.
  • In order to protect and advance human rights in the era of artificial intelligence, the seminar will close with specific proposals for legislators, business executives, and engineers.

 

Submission Fees

No submission or presentation fee is required.

REWARDS: The seminar’s top three papers will receive prizes.

PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITY: A book with an ISBN will contain a selection of the papers.

 

Submission Guidelines

GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION:

  • English must be used for all abstracts.
  • The abstract should be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or.docx) and should not exceed 250 words. Before being accepted, abstracts will be examined.
  • Authorship: Up to two authors may co-author a work.
  • Submission of the Cover Letter: Along with the work, a cover letter outlining the author or authors’ details should be included. It should include the paper’s title, the authors’ names, their designations, their institutions and affiliations, and their contact details (phone, email, etc.).
  • Send in your cover letter and abstract via the Google Form Link alone.

Note: Authors are advised to submit just the abstract at first. Since there are only a few spots available for the presentation, the authors must submit the completed work as soon as the abstract is accepted.

 

GUIDELINES FOR PAPER SUBMISSION:

  • Every document needs to be written in English.
  • The paper’s word count should not exceed 3500–5000 words, including the abstract and footnotes.
  • All documents must be sent in Word (.doc or.docx) format.
  • Sending in the Cover Letter: Along with the paper, a cover letter outlining the author or authors’ details should be supplied. It should include the paper’s title, the authors’ names, their designations, their institutions and affiliations, and their contact details (phone, email, etc.).
  • Use the Google Form Link Only to submit your paper and cover letter.
  • Following abstract acceptance, a link to the Google Form for paper submission will be supplied.

 

FORMATTING:

  • Times New Roman, Font Size 12, 1.5 line spacing, justified text, and 1-inch margins on all sides of an A4 page are required for this type of paper.
  • The footnotes should have a single line spacing of 1.0, Times New Roman font size 10, and font size 10.
  • Headings must to adhere to the following guideline:
  • The submission’s title is uppercase, bold, and center-aligned with font size 14.
  • Headings: bold, uppercase, left-aligned, font size 12.
  • Subheadings: bold, left-aligned, title-case, font size 12.
  • Title-Case, Italics, Font Size 12, left-aligned, italicized is the sub-sub-heading.
  • Citation Format: Instead of using endnotes, please use footnotes. The Bluebook Citation Format (20th Edition) should be followed while creating footnotes.
  • Plagiarism: No more than 10% of content may be copied. There should be no plagiarism and no spelling, grammar, or other mistakes in the document. Should plagiarism be detected in excess of 10%, the article will be disqualified.
  • Manuscript Originality: Every submission must be the authors’ original work and cannot have been submitted for consideration in another publication.
  • AI-Generated Content: Submissions that contain AI-generated content will be rejected without consideration.
  • Copyright: After your paper is accepted, you give all ownership and copyright rights to the submitted material to the event organizers, which is Barkatullah University’s Department of Legal Studies and Research. This includes the right to exhibit, distribute, and reproduce works based on the content, among other things.

 

GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTERS/RULES FOR THE PRESENTATION:

  • After the deadline for submission, neither the abstract nor the complete paper will be accepted.
  • The presentation of the paper will only happen offline.
  • Identification Requirements: Each participant is required to provide one passport-sized photo and identification proving their institution connection.
  • After the abstract is accepted, paper presenters must register offline starting at 9 a.m. on December 10, 2024.
  • Offline registration is required for presentations.
  • The Seminar will only be open to those who have registered.
  • Only after delivering the paper successfully will all registered participants receive a presentation certificate.
  • T.A. / D.A. – The organizers will supply the participant with lodging and transportation; there will be no TA/DA.
